In the shadowy corridors of Mexico's criminal underworld, few figures loom as large or as enigmatically as Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as "El Mencho." As the elusive leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), his name has become synonymous with both immense power and profound mystery. Recent events have reignited debates about his fate, the dynamics within his organization, and the cartel’s audacious public displays.

Rumors surrounding El Mencho's demise have swirled persistently, fueling speculation and uncertainty. In March 2024, whispers of his death gained momentum, prompting responses from high-ranking officials. Matthew Allen, Director of the Los Angeles office of the DEA, addressed these rumors, stating that El Mencho is still alive. He did not rule out the possibility that the cartel leader himself might have spread misinformation about his health to mislead authorities and rivals. Allen remarked, "Maybe it's true, I don't know for sure. Or maybe it is misinformation that he spreads so that other people believe that he is weak when in reality he is very strong."

Further dispelling the rumors, in 2020, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) addressed the nation, stating unequivocally that the reports of El Mencho's death were unfounded. AMLO emphasized the prevalence of misinformation and the challenges it poses in the fight against organized crime.

Public Displays and Societal Impact

The CJNG's audacity was on full display during a recent concert at Guadalajara's Auditorio Telmex. On March 29, 2025, the musical group Los Alegres del Barranco projected images of El Mencho during their performance, particularly while singing a corrido honoring him. This act sparked widespread outrage and led to official investigations.
